Because of its prime coastal position, Los Cabos has long been recognized as one of the best places in the world for big game fishing. This is because millions of years ago, a massive earthquake split Baja from mainland Mexico. The Pacific Ocean rushed into the almost 1,000-mile chasm, creating the Sea of Cortez—a fishing trap thanks to its nutrient-rich waters that sometimes reach depths of more than a mile and support some 650-plus species. More marlin are caught in Cabo San Lucas than anywhere.
In the Cabo San Lucas marina, you'll see hundreds of sportfishing boats, filling every available dock slot. These boats range from the fairly primitive vessel to the most luxurious yacht. There are many chartering opportunities. Sportfishing in this area used to be the realm of only the wealthy, beginning in the 1950s when affluent anglers found that the waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez were abundant with billfish. Nowadays, just about any visitor can afford to fulfill his or her dream fishing expedition.
